Indigenous Guidance and Knowledge
HOPE Inc.’s programs are guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and perspectives, in collaboration with Traditional Owners and cultural leaders from the regions in which our programs operate and from the communities our students come from.
Through this guidance, traditional knowledge is meaningfully integrated into our teaching of nutrition, sleep, movement, mental wellbeing and personal responsibility. Students learn that health is deeply connected to land, culture, community and daily practices.
Students experience this through:
• Learning about natural foods sourced from the local environment, including traditional methods of gathering, preparing and sharing food
• Understanding the importance of movement through connection to land and practical activities
• Experiencing rest, reflection and sleep in a natural environment, aligned with traditional ways of living
• Developing respect, responsibility and care for self, others and Country
Through this integration, students gain not only cultural understanding, but a deeper appreciation of how traditional knowledge supports strong, healthy and balanced lives.
Why did H.O.P.E. start?
As a high school teacher in Queensland, I see daily how students’ wellbeing is being challenged. Many are sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, disengaged, and struggling to connect. Diets are often high in sugar and low in quality nutrition, leaving young people without the fuel they need for healthy bodies and growing brains.
Research from Maslow and Alderfer shows that when basic needs - nutrition, sleep, safety and connection - are not met, learning and development are limited. This is what we are seeing in classrooms.
This led to the creation of HOPE Inc. (Health, Opportunity, Purpose and Empowerment Incorporated) - to help young people take responsibility for their wellbeing and build better life pathways.
The Challenges We See
Poor nutrition
Sleep deprivation
Disengagement from education
Difficulty connecting with others
Declining physical health
Rising mental health concerns
Increasing youth crime
Youth unemployment
Our Approach
HOPE Inc. delivers structured camp-based learning experiences for young people aged 11–16, focused on lifelong health and wellbeing.
Nutrition: Real, unprocessed foods to fuel growth and development Sleep: Environments that support proper rest and recovery Connection & Growth: Guidance from educators and mentors to build confidence, resilience and connection
We give young people the tools, knowledge and responsibility to take control of their health and their future.
Our Camps
HOPE Inc. delivers a variety of camps designed for different groups, and we can tailor programs to meet specific needs. Some of our camps are outlined below.
Tween and Teen Girls’ Camp
A supportive camp for girls to reconnect with themselves, build healthy habits, and develop confidence through nutrition, sleep, movement and meaningful connection.
Boys to Men Camp
This camp focuses on nutrition, sleep and navigating the challenges of adolescence. Led by male facilitators who model strong values and behaviours, the program supports boys to build confidence, resilience and responsibility as they grow into capable young men.
Juvenile justice support
Research shows that when young people improve their nutrition, sleep, physical health and mental wellbeing, their risk of offending decreases.
At HOPE Inc., we create powerful, hands-on learning experiences that empower young people to take ownership of their health, their choices and their future.
Our boys’ and girls’ camps help build confidence, resilience and direction - setting young people on a stronger path forward.
